                  THE RON CLARK STORY

While I was watching this movie, I actually admired the way followed by Ron Clark because he doesn’t give up whatever students do. He undertakes all responsibilities of the worst class in the school that nobody wants to give a lecture. Professionally he accomplishes what he aims.

Mr. Clark initially tries to recognize his students. In order to learn learners’ general characteristics such as social problems, ethnic groups, socio-economic level, their home environment and family relationships, he visits their homes and becomes acquainted with each family one by one under unexpected circumstance. For example, when he goes to his student Julio’s house, he learns that Julio was born when his mother was just fourteen years old. It seems to me that this situation is amazing. I can’t image how such a young girl as Julio’s mother brings up his children. Besides, Mr. Clark witnesses that Julio steals money from mother’s bag while she is talking to Mr. Clark. Although Mr. Clark is aware of this, he doesn’t say anything. If I were him, I could have reacted reluctantly.Under these circumstances he maintains to visit students’ house. Even after he identifies and analyzes his students, he helps them more than necessary. For instance, so that his student Shameika can do her homework herself, he goes her house and looks after her siblings and also makes meal for them. So that his student Julio can improve his math skill, he meets him in the café and plays card games because Julio can easily understand the numbers by playing card games and he can reply immediately the questions about number which Mr. Clark asks while they are playing.

Secondly, once he knows his students, he begins writing objectives of his lesson. He already determines some objectives in class. For example, he says that they are a family, they should trust and respect each other and they should call Mr. Clark by saying ‘Sir’. He writes these rules on the phosphorescent papers hugely. For example, Mr. Clark determines as objectives that they are going to learn all forty two presidents of US in order. But he discovers from exam grades that his students couldn’t understand verbally. Then he changes his methods and materials, selects music and CD. Player as materials. He creates a composition including forty two presidents of US. As a result of this practice of these materials, all students learn presidents wondrously and they get high marks in exam.

When Mr. Clark is ill, he don’t give up lessons. His girl friend is recording him with a camera while he is giving lecture for his students in his home. Then he sends the DVD to class and students watch his DVD through the TV and DVD player during the two weeks without existence of their teacher in classroom. Hence, students don’t remain deficiency from any topics.

Mr. Clark is aware of necessity of learner participation for learning so he makes students active during lesson by discussions, questions and answers, hand-on activities. He gives opportunities them to participate in lesson. He doesn’t lecture for an entire course hours in order to avoid monotony. He shows his confidence to students and he motivates them all the time. Even at the beginning of the movie, he talks a child embarked from the lesson because of his incomprehension in class and in order to prove his ability to understand something he asks child’s name then says himself and then he asks him what Mr. Clark’ s name is. Student answers him by saying ‘Jon Clark’. Thus Mr. Clark shows child that he has the ability to learn.

Finally,as I said at the beginning of my reflection text, I admire Mr. Clark theory, because I want to be a teacher as him. I can cope with students like them but not as patiently as he does. When I am teacher, I will meet my students’ family and I will get to know their environment and situation. I think that is beneficial. When I am teacher, firstly I state my objectives after I analyze my students. For example, I say what we will do this semester and at the end of the semester what they will learn. According to my students’ characteristics and learning styles, I suppose that I will use visual, musical material in order to be enjoyable and attractive.I will always converse with my students in the classroom. I try to include them into lesson. If my instructional strategies haven’t got students interesting in participation or the strategy is difficult for me to manage, I will revise method of assessment or I supply enough time for students to master the objectives. One more thing I like in the film is that Clark plays with his students and in this way he is getting to them. He deals with not only students’ achievement but also their troubles. Even he takes care of them and he knows their all characteristic and special feature more than parents do.

An amazing story about real person.

This video is capable of telling a whole story efficiently. It is getting more emotional because of the background music and the scenes which are chosen meticulously and also Ron Clark's struggle. Although I had already watched this movie twice, I also this video tirelessly whenever I log in my blog. At every turn, I put myself in Ron Clark's shoes and so I understand in every time that duties of a teacher should not be underestimated. As most of us know, when we say that we will become a teacher after we graduate from the university, some people ask to us why we will have a better profession than schoolmastering. Yet I suspect sometimes that those people may be illiterate. They are not aware of the holliness of this profession. No matter what those people say, I will become a great teacher like Ron Clark;)

        TURKEY’S RELIGIOUS-SECULAR DIVIDE

In the text of BBC newscast, “Turkey’s religious- secular divide“ basically the writer puts emphasis on the direction of turkey’s spiritual situation. The topic of operation “sledgehammer“, dark episodes, Islamic restriction, mistrust and fear are mentioned in this text. I totally agree with the writer. In my opinion, the writer clarifies wondrously Turkey’s current status and mentions this topic sufficiently although the text is very brief.
I am in agreement with the writer definitely about the Islamic restriction. Since nowadays some parts of Turkey are under the influence of alcohol prohibition. I can’t make sense of this interdiction. I think now that unless the young are 24 years old, they are not allowed to drink and buy alcohol. Despite of this, people, eighteen years old, are allowed to acquire gun license.
The writer goes on to say that all woman, who are wearing a headscarf, can get in some official sites such as university. Even they can attend some classes with covering any restriction, even though instructors don’t permit them to attend their course in this condition. For this reason, I agree with the writer’s reference on Islamic restrictions.
In addition, I acknowledge the writer to be right undoubtedly in terms of public mistrust and fear, since we rely on neither the military nor the governing party. We are in quandary what to do. As a result of this situation, every one of the people begins to believe which option sounds more logical.
All in all, there are viewpoints that I persistently agree with the text “Turkey’s religious-secular divide“. Since the current situation of Turkey is getting more ambiguous in terms of government and religion. So we can see the content of all the topics obviously mentioned by the writer.

                        THE MUSEUM OF INNOCENCE

I would like to write something about this book because it is so impressive that I can’t forget any event which comes true in this book. First of all, its writer is Orhan Pamuk. We always keep calling Pamuk the Turkish Proust. Then it is asserted that we have a brilliant author on our hands like Orhan Pamuk. I think we should read this book for two reasons. While the first reason is that when we read this book , we will the pleasure of a subtle novel, the second reason is that the only access to the reality of life is good fiction. Orhan Pamuk is such a gorgeous writer that we can’t find ample word to explicate his novel. Pamuk and Proust share deep sensibilities. I draw this conclusion thanks to pervasive sense that I get from reading Pamuk’s novels.
Anyway, as we are reading the museum of innocence, the book immerses us in Kemal’s universe. However, sometimes this book may be so boring. While I was reading some parts of it, Pamuk always narrates an unlucky lover, Kemal, and his struggles in vain. To put it another way, Pamuk comments on Kemal’s approach to Fusün for winning her back. Hence, upon closing the final page, you might get bored because of six hundred pages of emotional turmoil with a little solution and unhappy end.:(
In addition, I want to mention golden instant in life. No one recognizes the happiest moment of their lives, while they are living it. Yet, Kemal identifies his golden instant of live when he is with Fusün in Merhamet Apartment.
To sum up, I believe that while you are reading this book you can see that your thoughts about not only love but also marriage, friendship, sexuality, passion, relations and happiness are impressed profoundly.

FRIENDS (TV SERIES)

I decided to write reflections about friends TV series because any TV serials except for friends didn’t give me pleasure as much as friends did. Friends TV series are about six young people, on their own and struggling to survive in the real world, find the companionship, comfort and support they get from each other to be perfect antidote to the pressures of life. These series, written by Kevin Ackley, continued for 10 years on TV. I started watching these series with my friend’s recommendation. Firstly, I didn’t want to watch a series that is very old. Yet, thanks to my curiosity, I began to watch them and I was amazed. I admire all character in separately. So I want to mention the characters in series. In my opinion, the first and the most prominent and comic character is Chandler Bing, a financially secure data processor, who relies on humor as a defense mechanism. Despite being rich, his 5 friends have no idea what his profession is. :D He is a wimpy, average looking cigarette addict. The second character is Joey Tribiani. Despite being close to all the friends, he is especially open with Chandler, who is also his roommate. Joey is small time actor, who desperately wants fame and fortune and Chandler has high hopes of Joey. So, He helps Joey with money for acting lessons. Despite being a relatively bad actor, Joey is an adorable, sensitive guy, who is very successful with woman but needs to become famous and rich to complete his successful life. The third character is Rachel Green, a popular schoolgirl of the past. But in the series, she is spoiled brat living off her father finance. She shares an apartment with an old best friend Monica Geller who is a compulsive neat freak. Monica has trouble with her love life. She was teased when she was in high school for being overweight. However, now she is a head-chef at a top restaurant in Manhatten and has lost all her excessive weight. She just wants to start a family with the right guy to complete a happy life. Other character is Ross Geller, Monica’s brother. He always had strong love feelings for Rachel. A successful professor of science leads him to be often teased by the other 5 friends about his profession. Ross has experienced many misfortunes in life, including 3 divorces and bringing up a child with his lesbian ex-wife. The final character is Phoebe Buffay, brought up as a fatherless child. She is a ditzy but loveable hippy who has become a personal masseuse. Her dream is to become a star in the music industry and bases her songs on her life experiences. The other five friends secretly believe that she will never make it, but still they encourage her to write. She often performs in the ‘Central Park’ coffee house and she strongly believes in herself.

I think that each people, who wants to laugh and forget everything apart from friend series, should watch this series definitely I feel myself as one of them while I am watching them then I finished watching 10 seasons in a half-year. Since, they are amazing and very funny.
A funny episode from the series..I definitely suggest that you should watch this series.I wanna add something about the video I shared above. I love the character of Joey and he acts his role perfectly.I chose this video for sharing with you, because in this video Joey is trying to learn French for his audition. Yet he doesn't handle, because Phoebe teaches French to him but her expressions totally differ from Joey's.It is not quite what Phoebe is saying:)Utterances that he pronounces, definitely have not a word to do with French. In addition, I like the scene that Monica introduces surrogate mother to her friends. She is so happy.Because she will never bear a baby, she takes care of the girl who carries the baby which Monica will have. I recommended again and again and again that you should watch this series:):) You will enjoy. Trust me::)

        CREDIT CARDS RUINING OUR LIVES

I chose this topic because credit cards became an integral part of our lives. This topic has a huge importance in terms of individual and societal. Without a doubt, credit cards have advantages. However, its disadvantages are more than its benefits. Using credit cards carelessly affects domesticity and the young negatively.
To begin with, families suffer from cards, because all families can’t imagine their life anymore without credit cards and they purchase not only their necessity but also inessential stuffs. Consequently, they find themselves in debt off and their own stuffs are brought order of attachment by government. For another thing, the young are under the influence of credit cards. Initially, these cards seem to angels for young people but later they understand that all credit cards are nothing more than trap. However, they provide installment.
People who can’t pay their card dept off, for paying debt, they try to find a solution but solution, which they find, is not a fair way.
To sum up, I totally agree that credit cards are not beneficial to us. In other words, credit cards set a trap for us by giving extra attractive installment. So, I don’t have any credit card and I won’t in the future. If I have money to me, I spend money but if I haven’t, I don’t buy anything. I think it is the best way of shopping ;)

                             SOCIAL NETWORK SITES

I chose this topic because I know how much social network sites have influence on our life. This topic has a huge significance in terms of both personal and societal. The world, we live in, can’t be thought without internet and network sites. I would like to make an interpretation about this topic because it recalls for me an exceptional event which took place in my university campus. I want to narrate this incident briefly. One fine day, I went on the internet and I saw an invitation for snow war which would be arranged by the youths who stay at dormitories. Firstly, I had no intention to attend this organization because of my notion which was that nobody would participate in this war. I couldn’t imagine that all people would be informed of it in just two days. So I didn’t emphasis on the invitation about snow war and I forgot it. But two days later, somebody threw a snowball to the windows of my dormitory. Then I and my roommates heart a lot of noise from outside. When I looked at the outdoors, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Almost all undergraduate people from all dormitories on campus came to our dorm by holding handful of snow. At that moment I understood how the social media influences people. This impact is positive.
Besides, because of social network sites, people publish their all individual information and ill-intended people can reach their information easily in this way. Even where they live and work is easily accessible. So I have enough background information on this topic. That’s why I determined this topic. Eventually we are a fragment of the world of social media.

VIDEO:

I chose to upload this video, because I like it so much. The young are in pain because of the snowball, but at the same time they prolong to throw the snowball to each other by yelling ‘hit-hit-hit’J In my opinion, two people who are recording this video have more fun than people at the war do. Since the two people are not in pain. They take a shelter and just observe and also laugh the others. I am so sorry that I could not exist in this war at that day, because I had a temperature. Hence I had to watch them by looking at the window of my dormitory:( But this year, when the weather is snowy, I will attend this operation irregardless of illness even if I am sick, I promise myselfJ

Video Reflection

1) All students are pleased with being student in US. Krisha thinks that the system in US. deals with the creavity and team work.Linxi thinks that taking a major in chine is too hard to accomplish. America suggests more opportunities for practice.

2) Krisha chose the US. for her education in order to existin a creative environment and attend the team work in education. Briefly, their education system in their country is less flexible and doesn't give such facilities.

3) Linxi liked the idea of drying machine in the US. Arata have to take an entrance exam and choose a major program in their country. Then they have to maintain studiying it.According to krisha, their education system in her country is very hard and strict but the system in the US. is more flexible.

4) International students have to pay approximately 30.00 dollar in per year for beign student in US.However, it may alter according to which program they have.

5) Generally they had cultural difficulties. They trouble with communication, habits, adjustment to a new environment. But Arata didn't have difficulties as many as Linxi and Krisha because he already went to high school in another country.Yet,as Linxi and Krisha, he had some difficulties in culture.

6) Absulately they had cultural shock. What cultural shock for them is the difficulty they have adjusting to a new culture that differs markedly from their own.I m sure that if ı went to USA.,I would have same difficulties and maybe ı would live more challenges than they do. if ı were them, ı would trouble with especially communication to other people because ı m being very embarrassed while ı am talking to someone in English but ı believe I will overcome this by practice. In addition, ı don't think that ı could be accustomed to US. cuisine:S because ı am loving Turkish cuisine:)

Being a Metu Student

BEING A STUDENT IN METU

I am sophomore in METU. Firstly, I wanna mention about the load of our lectures. We already studied so much at high school. As this is not enough, We try to overcome in such a heavy course.Particularly in the first term, like every students,I had academical, social and psychological hardships. To be honest, I wish ı had studied and grade-grubbed less. But this did not happen. I supposed we would have lots of time for outdoor and indoor activities and university would be different from high school like universities in the TV series. But we do not have enough time to participate in communities which include just METU students because of heavy lessons.Instead of joining these activities, most of us would like to rest at their dormitories apart from studying. In that respect,METU does not satisfy me.However, campus life is awesome thing in METU.Lush grass, bushy forrest and historical buildings can be seen at everywhere. They all give me spring time flavor that we almost never know here.Since I am Aegean people,I admire sunny weather and ı hate cloud, rain, dry cold.So the muggy weather in campus makes me depressed.
Like most of the young people, I stayed in the family nest before coming here.I was so happy at that time.Because staying at home affects my life positively in terms of economics. While I was living with family,I had fewer expenses. But now I have a very large expenditure. As this is not enough, I do not know how the money is spent sparingly here.
Additionally, since I began to live at dormitories without my parents, sister and my little nephew:(.I have missed them so much. Also, living in dorms has a lot of difficulties. For example, I have to stay in the same room with three people other than myself.I need to plan my sleep and wake time according to their forms of life. However, dorm life is not always a bad influence on me.Because I had no idea about cooking before I began to live alone. Then I discovered that I am good at cooking as housewives:)
Briefly, being a METU student gives us so many opportunities for the rest of our life.Because METU makes students reliable, diligent, explorer, ambitious, forward-looking,considerate and accomplished.Despite some difficulties, being a metu student is a priviledge and a distinguished feature from other university students for me.
